HMD COMPARISON
A Breakdown of Some Popular HMDs
We have done some research at the websites of popular HMD manufacturers to bring you a comparison of various aspects of some of their HMD products. As a frame of reference, we have thrown in the known specifications of our CyberfaceX™ at the bottom of the table.
An overview of the individual HMD specifications:
- Model: The name of the HMD
- Maker: The name of the manufacturer with a hyperlink to their website
- Price: The price of the HMD
- Year: The year the HMD was (or will be) brought to market
- Stereoscopic?: Whether the HMD supports a stereoscopic 3D Display
- Orthoscopic?: Whether the HMD supports orthoscopic rendering of images
- FOV: The LATERAL field of view measured in degrees.
- Res.: The horizontal resolution measured in pixels per degree. The human eye can discern a resolution of up to 60ppd. See this article for more information.
- Head Tracking: The human head can translate along three different DOF (degrees of freedom) and rotate along three DOF. To capture the head's full motion, 6DOF head tracking is required. To capture the entire rotation of the head, an HMD must support at least 3DOF head tracking.
- Audio: What type of audio, if any does the HMD support? None? (N) Stereo? (S) Binaural? (B)
- Microphone: Does the HMD come with a built-in Microphone for multiplayer online communication or game commands?
- Weight (oz): How much it weighs.
Note that various manufacturers use different standards in specifying their HMDs. For example, many manufacturers report a diagonal FOV rather than a lateral FOV to make their displays appear to be wider. In these cases we have done the math to make all the values in the table match up for easy comparison.

- The original LEEP Cyberface™ was monochromatic, so while the image appeared slightly sharper, it used fewer pixel cells than than the Cyberface2™
- The Cyberface™ and the Cyberface2™ used a system called the Featherweight Chest Counterpoise to make it comfortable to wear. The actual Cyberface™ display unit weighed roughly 18oz, but to make it feel weightless, we actually added another 18oz that hung around the chest. The entire weight on the head was a total of 36oz, but the wait was evenly distributed on top of the head and there was no pressure on the face.
- The Cyberface3™, while being a hefty piece of equipment, actually supported all its weight on a mechanical suspension arm. We called it the Freedom Arm because the actual display unit felt weightless to the user.
- There are some specifications that have not yet been determined for the CyberfaceX™. But in terms of immersion, the other HMDs don't even come close to matching what the CyberfaceX™ is able to do by using Videowrap™ technology.
